Dumb and Dumber

One of the funniest movies ever was Dumb and Dumber starring Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels back in 1994. The Farrelly Brothers, the film creators, are back at again with a sequel, but it looks like the Los Angeles Lakers management has beaten them to it with some of the most overreacting and blatantly dumb decisions they have made over the past week. One would say that their first dumb decision was firing Mike Brown as the coach and the second dumb decision was not hiring Phil Jackson to replace him, but choosing Mike D’Antoni as the head coach. But their dumb decisions started a couple of years ago.

Dumb Decision #1: Picking up Josh McRoberts, Troy Murphy, Steve Blake, Darius Morris and Jason Kapono as starting and supporting players. Steve Blake definitely hasn’t been a starting point guard since he played at Maryland and even then I never thought he was NBA caliber. Then they compounded their guard problems by drafting Darius Morris and actually signing him not once, but twice. He definitely isn’t a NBA caliber player, let alone a high Division I recruit. His skills and ability were limited at Michigan, which is why he opted to go to the NBA because Trey Burke was coming to take his position. What Mitch Kupchak sees in him has yet to be seen by Lakers and Michigan fans. As for McRoberts, Murphy, and Kapono who knows what Kupchak was thinking? Three slow guys that had less than average college careers and if their shots aren’t falling what do they bring to the table.

Dumb Decision #2: Replacing McRoberts, Murphy, Kapono, and Goudelock with Chris Duhon and Darius Johnson-Odom. Don’t get me wrong I’m glad they let McRoberts, Murphy, and Kapono go, but to replace them with a Duke bench warmer and an erratic rookie is not fixing their bench problem. The Lakers need a backup point guard for Steve Nash to maintain the lead, bring some extra energy off the bench, and control the tempo. You’re definitely not going to get that from the guards they have on the bench now. Goudelock was a solid guard that could handle the pressure, hit the open jump shot as well as create his own shot off the dribble. Instead, they released him and kept Morris. What were you thinking Kupchak?

So you see, these dumb decisions have been going on for awhile. Did I mention that they were paying Luke Walton six million a year to sit the bench? It’s not like he could play anyway, but to give him top dollar to sit the pine was not fiscally responsible. Baby Buss and Kupchak don’t have a clue on how to run a NBA team, let alone the Lakers. It was Jerry West and Phil Jackson that brought the Lakers their last five rings and now Lakers fans are about to go on a wild rollercoaster ride, because D’Antoni can’t even come close to emulating what the “Zen Master” did. D’Antoni isn’t Jackson and Kupchak isn’t West! But Buss and Kupchak are definitely Dumb and Dumber!
